The One Thing That Defines a Leader (And Why Leadership Lists are Worthless)

When you read this though, you might catch a little sarcasm, a little bit of teeth grinding, a a tiny bit of, shall we say…mental tautness.

But I’m not mad. Life’s too short to get mad.

It has do with “leadership” and the mess we have made of the word. If you type in “leadership traits” into google, you get quite an astounding number of results.

Wow. That is an extensive list. I bet each page offers some really solid content. Some really, really juicy insight.😂

I wonder if any leadership images offer any clarity:

Yeah right.

Look, there is only *ONE* thing that defines a leader. And certainly one that is worth remembering.

To be a great leader, you need to subscribe to what I’m going to tell you below.

Embrace it. Squeeze it. Understand it.

As a leader, the only thing that you need to do is get someone from where they are now to where they want to be.

Allow me to break this sentence down real quick.

  1. You need a follower to be a leader. I guess you can follow yourself, but…well, nevermind. Get a follower.
  2. Find out where they are endeavoring to go.
  3. Ensure they get there.

There you have it. It’s not complicated. You can do all kinds of self-improvement to work on your leadership, credibility, reputation, trustworthiness, character….

You can work to become more trustworthy, more loyal, respectful, inspiring, empathetic, compassionate, forward-thinking, charismatic…

But that shit doesn’t get anyone anywhere.

To get somewhere where they want to go, it’s a two step process.

Two Step Process to lead someone effectively to the point they will remember you:

Know the answer to the first:

1. Where are you going?

Fight like hell to help and execute on the second:

2. How can I help you get there?

Mindblowing.

Do you have to be honest, trustworthy, loyal, inspiring, compassionate, empathetic, tireless, charismatic, enthusiastic to do for someone?

Well…yeah.

You need to be honest with them along their journey. They need to trust you that you have the resources to help them. You need to inspire them when things inevitably get tough. You need to compassion and empathy for their hard road ahead. Tireless in your pursuit to help and charismatic to do it for many more people to come.

To lead at the individual level and to lead at the team level require the same competence.

Do you know where your people are going?

Can you get them there?

Everything else is just window dressing…

Agree or disagree?

Let me know below! Would LOVE to hear your thoughts!
